In 2021, The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety's Final Report uncovered serious issues within the Australian aged care sector. Among the findings a key recommendation was clear: improve accessibility to quality training.
As a leading provider in the dementia training landscape Dementia Training Australia (DTA) was ideally placed to make a difference. And in 2022, with a grant from the Department of Health & Aged Care (DOHAC), we were tasked with delivering a product to increase accessibility to dementia training.
The problem? A diverse workforce with varying needs unable to easily locate and access context-appropriate training and resources. Instead, they rely on traditional methods of inquiry to source training recommendations, forced to contact multiple providers through lengthy internet forms, phone calls, and email correspondence. This manual process not only placed a significant burden on the individual but also strained the resources of providers. The solution? Develop a platform that empowers the workforce to easily navigate the wide gamut of training and training providers, offering recommendations specific to the individual, their workplace, care setting & knowledge level.

Our journey was defined by a human-centered approach, placing the dementia care workforce at the forefront of development. Engaging our users early in the design process was crucial, as we had to deliver against a set of predetermined requirements. Validating these requirements and decisions were essential to project success and user acceptance. Leveraging our existing user database, we identified our core segments, including General Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals, Nurses and Personal Care Attendants, amongst others. Initially testing on high-level wireframes, each round of feedback informed our solution, leading to the development of an alpha and later, a beta working prototype. Through this iterative design process, the platform's functionality was refined, ultimately achieving a high customer satisfaction score (CSAT) of over 90% in our final round of testing.
"I love that all the dementia stuff will be on the same platform. It's easy to find... Gives a nice holistic view"

As of writing (Feb 2024), the project's design phase has concluded, and it has been handed over to DTA's technical team for implementation & maintenance before the launch scheduled for July 2024. The platform is set to include training and resources from leading providers like DTA & Dementia Australia. All quotations are from our final user testing round externally facilitated by U1 Group .
